I loved China. I went to Beijing, Pingyao, Xi'an, Yangshuo and Guangzhou and we traveled mostly by train. I went with a group of 20 people and luckily we all clicked, so that helped a lot. At Beijing our guide waited for us and she guided the whole trip and did a perfect job, especially for someone of 23 years old. Very professional. Beijing was big, but I had fun. I went to a Karaoke bar with the people of the group and sang 'yellow submarine'. I also went on some excursions. One was the Hutong tour and seeing the Bell Tower and eating at a local family. I can be short about the food in China.. it's GREAT. I loved everything. Much better then the food in Holland, but I guess it all depends on your taste. The Hutongs were impressive. We visited a local school and saw the little children eating there. I donated money, so they could have a better education. I learned that Chinese children learn English at the age of 5 nowadays and during the trip I met many people talking English to us. The children and the teens were the best at it. The rest only talked a few words, but nevertheless impressive since I can only imagine English is as hard for them as Chinese is for me. I am still stuck at Chapter One in my Chinese for Dummies book The Forbidden City was impressive and it was a really hot day. I took many photos and it was a great day. Our guide took us in. Originally she would meet us at the end, but since we all wanted to have a guide inside she decided to go with us and translated the audiotape she got at the entrance. She never guide people inside, so it was also new for her. The Great Wall was again a great experience. It wasn't crowded. In fact it was so quiet I could even hear the blood rushing through my ears. Very, very beautiful. I bought some t-shirts from the people selling souvenirs there. Sadly I did it at the beginning. Later I learned they all sold the same and at the end of the line my t-shirts were sold for 1 dollar. It's hard for me to bargain, but over the days I learned to bargain a lot better The Summer Palace was nice, but we were all tired, so we just strolled around and took photos.
Pingyao was great, but also really touristic. The scenery was nice and so was the hotel. I bought a Chinese CD there and took photos
I didn't like Xi'an too much. Too crowded and really a big city, but the Terracotta Army was nice. Again I took photos and it was really hot that day. I had a Full Body massage in Xi'an. I went for a Foot massage with my new friends, but they took the Full Body, so I joined them. It was nice to be able to relax and good for the muscles. I also saw the White Goose Pagoda and it was nice.
The train trip to Yangshuo was nice. We had the Soft sleepers and it was really luxurious. We had our own cabin for 4 people, together with air co, private storage room, luxury beds and things like that. This all thanks to our guide. She was great and arranged a lot for the group. In the train I also met some people who wanted to talk English. One 10 year old girl called Lois was interested in talking English with me, so that was nice. She did a perfect job with her English. Much better then mine Chinese I even taught her a few words in Dutch, so that was fun Yangshuo was great. It's actually mostly for tourists, but the Karst Peaks all around town were breath taking. I bought some souvenirs, I sat at a nice bar called Kelly's Place, took a bike ride through the country side and climbed Moon Hill - which is a really high mountain with around 800 steps. I was beaten when I reached the top, but I did it We also saw a light show directed by the people who also will direct the opening of the Olympic Games in Beijing next year. It was great and a friend of mine bought a DVD and CD of the show.
The last day we spend in Guangzhou, but that was just one day waiting for the plane to get us back to Holland. The plane trip was a long one, but I managed. Now I am back home and I already miss it again, so this means I had a great time. One of my best vacations ever
